Start with the task, then the technology
Factory automation connects sensing, control and physical movement. A robot arm is one part of that system: fixtures locate the workpiece, tooling performs the operation, controllers coordinate actions, and inspection checks the result. The useful starting point is the production task—handling, welding, assembly or inspection—rather than the robot alone.
Three layers to understand
Components include drives, motors, encoders and controllers. Machine builders combine them into equipment. Integrators connect equipment, tooling and software into a production cell or line. One company can work across more than one layer; a product catalogue does not by itself establish a supplier relationship.
